Jonathan Green was born in 1955 in Gardens Corner, South Carolina, in the heart of the Lowcountry. He was raised by his grandmother, from whom he learned the Gullah language and culture of the Gullah community. After high school, he joined the US Air Force and then enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned a BFA in 1982. Since his graduation, Green has had a highly successful career in art, and he has earned critical acclaim for his interpretation of Gullah culture.
