1. Introduction
Orions Map LLC ("Company," "we," "us," or "our"), a Vermont limited liability company, operates the website orionsmap.com ("Site") and the services available through it (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you access or use the Service.
By using the Service, you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information Collected Automatically
When you visit the Site, the following information may be collected automatically if you consent to cookies:
- Device and browser information (browser type, operating system, screen resolution)
- IP address (which may be truncated or anonymized by our analytics provider)
- Cookie identifiers and similar tracking technologies
- Pages visited, time spent on pages, and referring URLs
- Approximate geographic location (city-level, derived from IP address)
If you decline cookies, none of the above data is collected.
2.2 Information You Provide

- Bug reports — If you submit a bug report, we collect the description you provide. No personal information is required or requested.
2.3 Information Stored Locally
We store the following data in your browser's local storage (not on our servers):
- Theme preference (light/dark mode)
- Cookie consent choice (accepted/declined)
These are essential for the Site to function and are not transmitted to us or any third party.
3. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To operate and maintain the Service
- To understand how users interact with the Service and improve it
- To display advertisements through Google AdSense
- To respond to bug reports and venue submissions
- To detect and prevent abuse or unauthorized access
4. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use the following categories of cookies:
Strictly Necessary
Local storage items for theme preference and cookie consent choice. These do not track you and cannot be disabled without breaking site functionality.
Analytics (Requires Consent)
Google Analytics (GA4) cookies that collect anonymous usage data. These are only set if you click "Accept" on the cookie consent banner.
Advertising (Requires Consent)
Google AdSense cookies that may be used to serve personalized advertisements. These are only set if you click "Accept" on the cookie consent banner.
If you decline cookies, only the strictly necessary local storage items are used. No analytics or advertising cookies are set, and no tracking occurs.
5. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services that may collect information about you:
- Google Analytics (GA4) — Web analytics service provided by Google LLC. Collects usage data via cookies when you consent. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy. Learn more about how Google uses data from sites that use their services.
- Google AdSense — Advertising service provided by Google LLC. May use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- Map Tile Provider — The interactive map loads tile images from a third-party tile server. Your approximate viewport location (geographic coordinates) is transmitted to the tile server to render the map. No cookies or identifiers are sent with these requests.
6. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We may share information in the following circumstances:
- Service providers — We share data with third-party service providers (currently Google Analytics and Google AdSense) that help us operate the Service. These providers process data on our behalf and are contractually prohibited from using it for other purposes.
- Legal requirements — We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
- Business transfers — In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of our assets, user information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify users via a prominent notice on the Site of any change in ownership or uses of information.
- With your consent — We may share information for other purposes if we have obtained your explicit consent.
We do not sell your personal information. If this changes in the future, we will update this Privacy Policy and provide you with the opportunity to opt out before any sale occurs.
7. Data Retention
We retain information as follows:
- Analytics data — Retained by Google according to our GA4 configuration and Google's data retention policies. We have configured GA4 to retain user-level data for 14 months.
- Venue submissions and bug reports — Retained indefinitely to improve the Service, unless you request deletion.
- Local storage data — Persists in your browser until you clear it. We have no access to or control over this data.
8. Data Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we collect. The Site is served over HTTPS, and we do not store personal information on our own servers. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. International Data Transfers
The Service is operated from the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. By using the Service, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States.
