In this series of classes led by teaching artist Kristen MacCarthy, participants will draw inspiration from Rachel Hayes’ installation “Looking through a Sewn Sky,” learn the basics of color theory and experiment with abstraction by creating their own layered watercolor paintings. Through guided exercises, we’ll explore mixing hues, overlapping translucent washes and incorporating line to evoke space and depth. Come rest and recharge in the galleries surrounded by inspiring art. Experienced mindfulness instructors lead guided meditations, gentle movements and slow-looking techniques. Thousands of students come to the Georgia Museum of Art every semester as part of their classes. The Student Showcase highlights the papers and creative responses resulting from these classes. Come see how UGA classes use our collection through these short, interdisciplinary presentations.
Need a break from studying for final exams? Students are invited to stop by the museum on Reading Day to participate in one of our art and wellness programs or take a pause and enjoy some art in the galleries at their own pace. Snacks, coffee and refreshments provided. This program is presented in partnership with UGA’s Office of Student Care and Outreach and with support from Anne & Bill Newton and Bill Parker. Lifelong learning through the arts offers opportunities to practice creativity and create community. Join teaching artist Toni Carlucci in the galleries to look at and talk about art in the permanent collection, then come to the studio classroom to make art and new friends. All levels are welcome. Artful Conversation programs are 30 minutes long, focus on just one work of art and provide opportunities for close looking, open-ended dialogue and discovery. Join Mallory Lind, associate curator of community engagement and outreach, for a conversation on “Genesis I” by Samuel M. Adler.

Teens ages 13 – 18 are invited to this studio-based workshop. Explore the galleries and make your own work of art inspired by what you see. This program is free and includes a pizza dinner from DePalma’s Italian Cafe. Seats are limited; register for the program on our website or email [email protected].
This program is presented by Chamber Music Athens in collaboration with the museum. It will include Tyson Gholston Davis’ “Sky-Ocean,” based on a painting by Helen Frankenthaler; Gabriela Lena Frank’s “Cinco Danzas de Chambi,” based on photographs by Martin Chambi; Sebastian Currier’s “Next Atlantis,” with projections and electronics processing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; and more. Athens’ established venues for visual art hold Third Thursday, an event devoted to art in the evening hours, on the third Thursday of every month from 6 until 9 p.m. to showcase their visual-arts programming. Full schedules and participants are posted at 3Thurs.org.

We’re bringing the outdoors inside at Family Day. Explore paintings created en plein air and see how artists pictured nature in every brushstroke, then play with watercolor paint to create your own outdoor-inspired artwork to take home. Family Day is sponsored by Heyward Allen Cadillac-GMC-Toyota.
